Three Irish individuals lost their lives in a tragic accident in southern Spain, according to an Irish official. The incident occurred when two vehicles collided on the A7 motorway near Malaga around 2:30 am CEST (1:30 am BST). The impact caused one of the vehicles to plunge down an embankment. Additionally, a fourth Irish citizen sustained serious injuries in the crash.
Reports from the Irish Mirror indicate that all four victims were likely from Mullingar in Co Westmeath and were in their late 20s or early 30s. Emergency responders, including firefighters and Civil Guard officers, rushed to the scene to provide assistance.
Robert Troy, a minister of state at the Department of Finance and a TD for Co Westmeath, expressed his deep sorrow after speaking with one of the affected families. He described the news as “absolutely devastating,” especially since the individuals had just begun their holiday last week.
Troy emphasized the community’s profound sadness and devastation over the tragedy. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Helen McEntee, echoed Troy’s sentiments, emphasizing the need to support the families during this difficult time. She extended her condolences and confirmed that immediate assistance was being offered by her department and An Garda Siochana.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is actively providing consular support to the affected families while refraining from commenting on the specifics of the case. Efforts are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
