A bout of rainy weather is expected to impact 21 regions across the United Kingdom on Tuesday, signaling a significant shift following the recent heatwave. The UK forecast for Monday night from the Met Office anticipates heavy rain moving into the northwest accompanied by brisk winds, while other areas will experience drier conditions with clear skies and a refreshing night ahead.
According to the weather service, Tuesday will be overcast in the northern and western regions, with showers likely to develop. The north may experience heavy rain with a chance of thunderstorms, while the southeast is expected to stay relatively dry. The Met Office predicts a warm-up in the southeast from Wednesday through Friday, with dry and sunny conditions. Conversely, the north and west will remain cloudy with occasional rain showers and temperatures around the average mark.
This change in weather follows a heatwave that broke the June temperature record in the UK for three consecutive days, with Santon Downham in Suffolk reaching 37.3°C on June 26. Several other weather stations also surpassed the previous record of 35.6°C set in 1976 and 1957. Andy Page, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, highlighted the extraordinary heatwave and its implications for temperature extremes in the UK due to climate change.
Last week witnessed Wales setting a new June daily maximum temperature record at 35.9°C in Bute Park, Cardiff, on June 25. Northern Ireland matched its warmest June day on record with 30.8°C in Castlederg on June 25, equaling the temperature recorded in 1976.
