“WHAM! 10 Days in China” Doc Takes Fans Behind the Curtain

A captivating new 90-minute documentary titled WHAM! 10 Days in China is set to hit theaters next month, showcasing never-before-seen footage of the band’s 10-day journey behind the iron curtain.

During a rare interview, former manager Simon Napier-Bell discloses his strategy to propel George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley into the international spotlight. Managing WHAM! from 1983 to 1985, Simon recalls taking charge of the duo after watching their debut hit “Young Guns” on Top of the Pops.

Challenged by George Michael’s ambition to become the top group within a year, Simon, along with his business partner Jazz Summers, proposed the idea of being the first Western pop group to perform in China. This groundbreaking concept resonated with George, kick-starting a series of events that led to WHAM!’s historic performances in China.

Facing numerous obstacles in China, Simon persisted in his mission, eventually securing lunch meetings with Chinese ministers through unconventional means. His persistence paid off when WHAM! received the long-awaited invitation to perform in China.

The concerts in Beijing and Guangzhou marked a turning point for WHAM!, despite initial challenges such as stage fright and audience protocol. The band’s groundbreaking performances garnered global attention, propelling them to international fame.

Although the tour did not yield significant financial gains for WHAM!, the exposure generated invaluable publicity for China and paved the way for future investments in the country’s development.

The upcoming documentary, featuring restored footage of the historic visit, promises to provide audiences with a unique perspective on WHAM!’s journey to China. Simon’s strategic approach and the band’s groundbreaking performances continue to be celebrated as pivotal moments in music history.

As the world commemorates the 10th anniversary of George Michael’s passing, fans are invited to revisit the band’s iconic legacy through the WHAM! 10 Days in China documentary, offering a glimpse into the band’s remarkable journey to global stardom.

Tickets for the documentary will be available starting June 24, with the film scheduled for release in cinemas on July 28. For more information, visit www.wham10daysinchina.com. Simon Napier-Bell’s book, “I’m Coming to Take You to Lunch,” is also currently available for readers.
