“Tragic Loss: Boy Dies in Leicestershire Lake”

A 13-year-old boy named Hayden Jones-Powell tragically passed away after encountering difficulties in a Leicestershire lake where he went to cool off after school. Described by his family as a delightful and affectionate soul, Hayden was found in Meynell Lake on Fosse Way around 1:30 pm. The incident prompted police divers to retrieve his body from the water. Leicestershire Police stated that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, and they will compile a report for the coroner to determine the exact circumstances of Hayden’s demise.

Hayden’s family shared that he had gone to the lake with his friends to wade in the water and beat the heat. A fundraising campaign has been initiated by Hayden’s family to arrange a fitting farewell for him. Described as a charming, mischievous boy who adored West Brom Albion, animals, and was a loyal friend, Hayden’s sudden departure on June 25 left his family devastated.

The fundraiser has already garnered over £2,300 from more than 130 supporters. The family expressed their desire to bid farewell to Hayden in a manner that honors his beautiful spirit. They acknowledged that while nothing can bring Hayden back, giving him a proper goodbye is a crucial step in their healing journey.

The tragic incident occurred during a period when the UK was experiencing scorching temperatures, with heat warnings covering most of England and Wales. Leicestershire was under an amber heat warning, predicting temperatures exceeding 30C and potentially peaking at 38C until midnight.

In a separate initiative, The Mirror launched the “Save Lives for Sam” campaign in June to combat the alarming rate of drowning incidents involving children in England. The UK witnessed a distressing toll of 19 fatalities in water-related incidents over a week during an intense heatwave in May. This rise in drownings has been labeled an “epidemic” and a “national emergency” by campaigners.
