Firefighters are battling an extensive wildfire in the Peak District amid a scorching June heatwave across the UK. The fire started at Tintwistle Moor near Glossop and Tameside on Wednesday night, affecting wooded and grassed areas. Crews from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been working to contain the blaze, with dramatic footage showing the scale of the fire’s impact on approximately 400 square meters of moorland and woodland.
As the Met Office recorded a temperature of 36.7C in Merryfield, Somerset, making it the hottest June day on record in the UK, surpassing the previous day’s high of 36.1C in Hampshire. Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, expressed concern over the wildfire’s impact on the vulnerable moorlands, urging the public to be cautious during hot and dry weather to prevent similar incidents.
Due to the wildfire, the A628 Woodhead Pass has been closed between the Gun Inn, Mottram Moor, and the Flouch roundabout, prompting authorities to advise people to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed if they detect smoke. National Highways confirmed the closure of A628 Woodhead Pass in both directions and recommended motorists to use the M62 as an alternative route.
