Incoming PM Urged to Tackle Rising Living Costs

The government’s adviser on the cost of living issues a strong call for action to the incoming Prime Minister to address the financial struggles of many households. This appeal coincides with the anticipated appointment of Andy Burnham as the new Prime Minister following Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation amid a series of high-profile cabinet departures.

Richard Walker, the head of Iceland, emphasized the public’s concern over persistently high bills and the lack of focus from politicians on practical solutions during his store visits. Burnham’s immediate task will be to alleviate the financial strain on millions of citizens grappling with the ongoing cost of living pressures, primarily by jumpstarting the economy and easing the burden of exorbitant household expenses.

In an exclusive article for the Mirror, Lord Walker cautioned about an imminent wave of price increases in the coming months due to the lingering effects of the Iran conflict on energy and food costs. He urged the government not to postpone crucial decisions as households and businesses nationwide brace for an inflation surge affecting essentials like food and heating.

Lord Walker, previously endorsed Sir Keir for the PM role, now stresses the urgency of addressing rising living costs. Appointed as the government’s cost of living champion in February, he has been instrumental in proposing measures to mitigate financial strains on families, urging swift political actions to implement necessary changes.

Despite a recent slight dip in inflation to 2.8%, Lord Walker anticipates a resurgence in living expenses throughout the year, with costs expected to rise before moderating next year. He also appeals to retailers to consider affordability and prioritize consumers’ needs by not fully passing on the increased expenses to customers, especially for essential goods.

Expressing dissatisfaction with fuel stations exploiting price hikes amid geopolitical tensions, Lord Walker underscores the importance of a customer-centric approach to pricing decisions.
