London Mayor Sadiq Khan has remarked that US President Donald Trump seems to harbor strong feelings for him, as Trump recently reignited their ongoing feud by labeling Khan as “grossly incompetent” without any provocation. Khan, who has served as the mayor for over a decade and won three elections, humorously stated that he must be residing rent-free in Trump’s mind and questioned why the US President appears fixated on him.
Khan speculated that Trump’s interest in him might stem from being the mayor of a progressive, multicultural, and successful city like London, which recently won the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Prize for being the world’s best city in urban planning. The animosity between the two figures dates back to 2015 when Khan criticized Trump’s stance on banning Muslims from entering the US, leading to public clashes and mutual criticisms over the years.
Despite the ongoing tensions, Khan expressed no intention to follow the path of Andy Burnham, who recently became Makerfield’s MP and is anticipated to become the UK’s next Prime Minister. Khan affirmed his satisfaction with his current position, stating that he looks forward to collaborating with Burnham if he assumes the role of Prime Minister. Additionally, Khan expressed his disappointment over Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to resign as Prime Minister, emphasizing his positive relationship with Burnham and their shared political history.
