“Rare ‘Blood Rain’ Forecasted in UK Heatwave”

A unique weather event is expected to occur, leading to the accumulation of dirt on cars and windows during the ongoing heatwave. Meteorologists predict the occurrence of “blood rain” over the weekend, particularly in the South of England, as a result of high levels of dust particles carried by Saharan plume into the region. This phenomenon will result in a hazy speckled covering on homes and vehicles once the rain falls.

According to senior meteorologist Jim Dale from British Weather Services, the transition from the heatwave to cooler temperatures will bring showers and thunderstorms carrying sand particles from the high atmosphere, causing hazier conditions. The dust from the Sahara region will mix with rainfall, leading to cars being covered in sand and dust, primarily in the southern areas.

The unusual “blood rain” occurrence is rare in the UK due to the usual climate patterns. However, the current heat dome has caused temperatures to rise significantly, with a recorded peak of 36C in Gosport, Hampshire. A red weather warning, indicating a risk to life, is in effect until Friday as the high-pressure system slowly moves eastwards. Numerous schools have closed, mainly in south Wales and the Southwest of England, due to the extreme weather conditions.

As temperatures cool, the UK is expected to experience significant rainfall, with the heaviest downpours anticipated in northern parts over the weekend. Previous instances of blood rain in the UK have resulted in cars, windows, and outdoor furniture being covered in dirt, requiring cleaning.

Although the phenomenon may cause cosmetic disruption, it is not harmful to health, and meteorologists often refer to it as “blood rain” due to its peculiar appearance. Stav Danaos, a lead weather presenter at the BBC, explained that the mixing of Saharan dust with rain can leave dirty deposits on surfaces, particularly cars and windows, creating the blood rain effect.
