“Beware Heatstroke in Pets: Spot Signs, Act Fast!”

The RSPCA is cautioning pet owners about the potential signs of heatstroke in animals, emphasizing that seemingly normal behaviors could indicate overheating. The organization is urging increased awareness during warmer weather to prevent pets from experiencing heat-related issues often mistaken for typical fatigue or feeling warm.

With temperatures expected to reach 37C in London today (June 24) and a Met Office red warning for extreme heat in various parts of the UK, the RSPCA’s advisory serves as a timely reminder for pet caregivers. Recognizing panting as a critical indicator of heatstroke in dogs is crucial, as this symptom, although common in hot conditions, should not be overlooked. It is recommended to relocate the dog to a cool, shaded area and ensure access to fresh water at the first sign of excessive panting.

While panting alone may not necessitate an immediate veterinary visit, it should be addressed promptly. Failure to address overheating and provide proper hydration can lead to more severe symptoms, including noisy or labored breathing, especially in breeds with flat faces. These warning signs of overheating require swift intervention to prevent escalation.

Certain dogs are more predisposed to heatstroke, and the RSPCA advises against covering the dog’s body with damp towels, as it can trap heat and exacerbate the situation. Placing wet towels underneath the dog, ensuring frequent rewetting, is a more effective cooling method. In cases of overheating, prioritizing cooling measures before transportation is essential to reduce the risk of further heat-induced complications, followed by seeking veterinary assistance for evaluation and treatment.

The RSPCA stresses the importance of immediate cooling to enhance the dog’s chances of recovery, emphasizing the mantra of cooling first, then transporting to avoid potential health hazards or fatalities. Maintaining a calm demeanor, focusing on the pet’s well-being, and taking proactive cooling measures are vital steps in safeguarding pets during episodes of overheating.
