Princess Anne and the Duke of Gloucester will join forces for a special overseas journey next week. Their trip to France is in commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, a pivotal event in World War I. Princess Anne, serving as the President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, will be accompanied by the Duke of Gloucester, who holds the title of Honorary President of the Somme Association.
Although the Duke of Gloucester typically maintains a low public profile, the two royals will come together for this significant occasion. Their visit to the Thiepval Memorial will involve unveiling UNESCO plaques to honor British and South African troops who fought in the Somme battle. Additionally, a ceremony at Ulster Tower will pay tribute to the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division who bravely fought during the offensive.
Following the joint service, Princess Anne will visit the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, while the Duke of Gloucester will participate in ceremonies at Guillemont Road Cemetery. This collaborative effort echoes a similar royal gathering during the centenary commemorations in 2016. The royal duo will then embark on separate engagements after their joint activities.
This upcoming journey signifies a rare occasion for Princess Anne and the Duke of Gloucester to work together, highlighting their shared commitment to honoring historical events and paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for their country.
