“American Woman Earns £4,000 Hosting World Cup Fans”

An American woman, not particularly interested in soccer, has managed to earn over £4,000 by offering rooms in her home to football enthusiasts attending the World Cup. Robin Urton, a 61-year-old artist, has generated $4,881 (£3,600) from nine bookings after listing her property on Airbnb before the tournament. Despite her lack of sports enthusiasm, she values interacting with diverse individuals in her residence, with her cats serving as amiable hosts that guests adore.

Living just a short drive away from Kansas City Stadium, Robin recognized the opportunity to capitalize on the influx of fans flocking to the city for the matches this summer. During the renovation of the upstairs suite in her Tudor-style home, she noticed reports of homeowners profiting from the tournament and decided to give it a try – a decision she deemed straightforward.

Unlike many hosts who vacate their premises during major sports events, Robin has chosen to coexist with her guests in the house. Expressing her reservations about entrusting strangers in her absence, she prefers to be present while accommodating visitors, providing her with the chance to engage with football enthusiasts from various countries, including Mexico and Argentina.

Guests staying at Robin’s property enjoy access to a spacious bedroom, kitchenette, dining area, living room, and private bathroom, with an additional downstairs bedroom available for two more guests. Robin ventured into renting part of her property six years ago after her long-term housemate departed. Initially suggested by a friend to offer furnished accommodation to nurses on short contracts near a research center, Robin discovered the higher earning potential compared to having a traditional lodger.

Although her initial listing on Airbnb garnered rapid bookings due to platform promotion, sustaining guest interest proved challenging as she only received two reviews. However, with a growing number of reviews, bookings are on the rise, primarily expected post-World Cup conclusion. Robin acknowledges that some reported earnings during the tournament may be exaggerated but emphasizes the tangible impact of the supplementary income.

Having earned approximately $700 (£531) from the first two bookings, Robin anticipates a total of $3,208 (£2,434) in earnings for June alone. She foresees an additional $973 (£738) in July while retaining availability. Despite acknowledging potential overhyping of homeowner earnings, Robin views the experience as beneficial, aiding in home upgrades essential for maintenance, affirming her willingness to rent out her house for future sporting events.
