The Ebola outbreak in Congo, with over 1,000 cases and 267 deaths, has seen the highest number of confirmed cases in the first month ever recorded, according to the World Health Organization. Despite efforts, tracing contacts of infected individuals remains a significant challenge.
In the Ituri province, where the outbreak was declared on May 15, Congo’s Ministry of Health reported that 100 people have recovered, with 365 patients either hospitalized or in isolation. Authorities are struggling with contact tracing, with only a 55% coverage rate achieved so far. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasized the importance of identifying the index case to control the outbreak effectively.
Ongoing violence from rebel groups in eastern Congo has hindered response efforts, with access to affected areas restricted. Concerns are rising about the spread of the disease beyond known cases, especially in densely populated displacement camps.
At the Kigonze displacement camp in Bunia, where over 20,000 displaced individuals reside, a spike in unusual deaths has raised fears of a potential Ebola outbreak. While no confirmed cases have been reported, the high death rate has prompted calls for further investigation.
The UN refugee agency has highlighted the vulnerability of over 2 million displaced people, including 320,000 refugees, living in Ebola-prone areas in Congo. As the outbreak evolves, officials are striving to contain the spread and address the challenges posed by the complex situation on the ground.
