“Met Police Combat Violence with Selfies at Events”

Metropolitan police officers are being encouraged to interact with fans at large events by taking selfies to combat violence against women and girls. The UK’s largest police force has committed to eradicating predatory behavior by increasing their presence at concerts and sports events. During a recent patrol at Wembley Stadium in London, officers mentioned they are advised to engage with concert attendees and even pose for photos.

Inspector Shaz Bassi, who is leading the operation, emphasized the importance of creating positive interactions with the public, noting that many individuals may not have previously engaged with law enforcement. Building trust and confidence with the community is a key focus, as most people attending events seek a sense of safety and appreciate police presence.

The initiative saw over 100 officers patrolling Wembley for the Summertime Ball, with even larger events deploying up to six times more personnel. This strategy aims to rebuild public trust following high-profile cases such as the tragic incidents involving Sarah Everard and the actions of police officers Wayne Couzens and David Carrick.

The Metropolitan Police reported positive outcomes from their approach, with a notable increase in reports of violence against women and girls, domestic abuse cases, and rape incidents. Claire Argyle from the Met’s Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) team highlighted the team’s progress in reducing violence through various initiatives and enhanced victim support services.

With 23,000 Met officers and staff receiving specialized VAWG training, the force continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of women and girls. The public has responded positively to seeing officers at events, indicating a growing sense of security and appreciation for law enforcement efforts in safeguarding communities.
