Police responded to a disturbance outside Lidl’s inaugural pub shortly after its grand opening. A man was taken to the hospital following what authorities termed as a “confrontation” outside The Middle Ale bar in Dundonald, on the outskirts of Belfast.
According to the supermarket chain, the incident originated inside the establishment when a group of patrons were asked to leave after closing time on Thursday night. Lidl stated that security personnel promptly escorted the group out.
A statement from the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that they received a report of an assault outside a licensed establishment in Dundonald on the evening of June 18. Around 11:20 pm, a scuffle involving two men occurred outside a location on Dunlady Road. Police arrived at the scene, and one man was hospitalized for non-serious injuries.
The PSNI mentioned that investigations were ongoing and urged any witnesses to provide information.
Lidl Northern Ireland released a statement acknowledging the incident at The Middle Ale the previous evening. The group of customers was asked to leave after closing time, leading to an altercation.
The Middle Ale, which opened its doors for the first time that day, is situated next to the existing Lidl store in Dundonald. This venture showcases Lidl’s innovative approach to comply with Northern Ireland’s rigorous licensing regulations, where obtaining a liquor license is highly regulated and limited.
Due to the challenge of demonstrating insufficient off-licenses in the area, Lidl altered its approach and applied for a pub license, citing a scarcity of bars in the region. After a complex process and overcoming legal hurdles, the chain successfully secured a license to serve alcohol in a pub format, featuring an attached off-sales section. The pub, with seating for 60 patrons, pays homage to Lidl’s renowned Middle Aisle of discounted products.
