“Rare Roy Keane World Cup Shirt Up for Auction”

An unexpected discovery has emerged in the world of football memorabilia – a rare World Cup shirt that is now set to be auctioned off with an estimated value of £20,000. The shirt belonged to ITV pundit Roy Keane, who famously left the Ireland squad before the Japan 2002 World Cup, causing a stir in the football community. Despite his departure, Keane’s tournament shirt had already been custom-made with his name and number.

The unique jersey was safeguarded by the team’s kitman, who brought it back from Japan and later passed it on to Jonathan Courtenay, the current owner. Having held onto the shirt for 24 years, Courtenay has decided to put it up for sale, expressing his readiness to part ways with it. The auction, organized by Budds, will take place in Wellingborough, Northants, coinciding with the start of the World Cup.

David Convery, head of sporting memorabilia at Budds auctioneers, highlighted the significance of Keane’s shirt, labeling it as a symbol of a pivotal moment in football history. The auction will feature a range of iconic items, including memorabilia from legendary players like Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton. This event promises to captivate football enthusiasts with its array of historic artifacts, showcasing the rich heritage and appeal of the game worldwide.
