A 14-year-old boy tragically passed away after being hit in the chest by a football during a match. Benjamín Valentín Donofrio, a youth player with Club Atlético Sarmiento de La Banda, was playing a recreational game when he received a forceful blow to his chest and abdomen. Witnesses stated that Valentín fell to the ground in intense pain. Despite briefly regaining his footing, he collapsed again in front of his friends, experiencing convulsions shortly after. Emergency medical assistance was urgently called to the field in La Banda, Argentina.
Upon the paramedics’ arrival, Valentín was swiftly transported by ambulance to the nearest health facility. Unfortunately, he suffered a cardiac arrest during the journey. At the hospital, medical personnel performed CPR in an attempt to revive him, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
In some rare instances, impacts to the chest can disrupt the heart’s rhythm, leading to a condition called commotio cordis. This phenomenon, observed in various sports, can result from seemingly minor impacts from sports projectiles like balls or pucks.
The Banda and Robles Prosecutor’s Unit has ordered a post-mortem examination to ascertain whether the impact directly caused Valentín’s death or if other factors played a role.
