“Pub Landlords Express Uncertainty Amid Rising Costs”

Nearly 50% of landlords express uncertainty about the future of their pubs in the coming year, according to exclusive research findings. While the recent World Cup provided a much-needed boost in revenue, many pub owners are struggling to stay afloat amidst a series of rising costs, including wages and energy expenses.

The changing habits of consumers, combined with the ongoing cost of living pressures, have also affected the frequency of patrons visiting their local pubs. These challenges have been consistently highlighted by the ongoing “Your Pub Needs You” campaign by The Mirror.

A recent survey conducted by Survation in collaboration with Greenpeace revealed that 47% of landlords are not confident about the prospects of their pubs in the next 12 months, with an additional 19% remaining uncertain. Among those lacking confidence, approximately two-thirds believe their businesses can only sustain current conditions for less than a year.

To weather the financial strain over the past year, a significant portion of struggling publicans have had to tap into their personal savings (48%), resort to personal credit cards or loans (18%), or even resort to remortgaging their properties (7%).

These alarming statistics coincide with Greenpeace’s call for government intervention to alleviate the burden of soaring energy costs on pubs. Concerns over escalating expenses, particularly related to wages, national insurance, and energy bills, have been top of mind for many pub owners.

Despite recent geopolitical developments like the peace deal between the US and Iran, energy costs remain elevated due to various factors, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In response to the financial challenges, a large percentage of pub owners have implemented drastic measures such as price hikes, staff reductions, energy usage adjustments, and pay cuts for themselves and their managers.

Greenpeace advocates for expanding government initiatives supporting renewable energy adoption in community spaces like pubs to lower operational costs. The organization emphasizes the potential savings that could be achieved by integrating renewable energy sources, similar to the solar panels initiative in schools and hospitals, to prevent pub closures.

Landlords like Miles Lyster-Connolly from The Prince Albert in Stroud and Adam Roberts in Chester have experienced firsthand the impact of surging energy expenses on their businesses. While some have resorted to innovative solutions like installing solar panels, others have negotiated new contracts to mitigate the financial strain.

As the hospitality sector grapples with financial challenges, the push for sustainable energy solutions and government support remains crucial to sustaining the vitality of local pubs and community hubs.
