Trump’s Iran Policy: A Disastrous Contrast to Obama’s Diplomacy

US President Donald Trump has frequently drawn comparisons between his approach to Iran and that of former President Barack Obama. Trump criticized the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action negotiated during the Obama administration, labeling it a “bad deal” that he believed would lead to Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. However, Trump’s poorly executed and disastrous military actions against Iran have severely disrupted global stability, impacted the world economy, and resulted in significant loss of life.

A direct contrast is evident between Obama’s JCPOA and the outcomes of Trump’s aggressive stance towards Iran, as well as the potential implications for any diplomatic agreements. The conflict has demonstrated Tehran’s ability to disrupt global energy trade by threatening to close the vital Strait of Hormuz, while also emboldening Iran to adopt a more assertive stance. Regrettably, the prospect of reaching a new nuclear deal with Iran appears more distant than ever.

Obama’s JCPOA, which was terminated by Trump in 2018, had the support of the UK, France, and Germany. The agreement included stringent monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities, aiming to prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for partial relief from crippling economic sanctions. Conversely, Trump’s proposed deal is viewed as a significant concession, potentially involving extensive sanctions relief and substantial financial reparations to Tehran.

A considerable portion of the funds is believed to be channeled to Iran’s proxy groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Yemeni Houthis. While Israel had reservations about Obama’s JCPOA due to reliance on Iranian cooperation, the Trump administration’s deal is vehemently opposed by Israel, as it excludes the country from negotiations and could restrict its ability to counter Hezbollah, a scenario Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is unlikely to accept.

The repercussions of Trump’s actions have reverberated across the Western world, leading to increased fuel prices and endangering thousands of dissidents in Iran, who now face the threat of reprisals and torture. Despite Trump’s assurances of support to these rebels, the reality is that they have been left vulnerable to a bleak fate, having been encouraged to rise up against the regime without substantial backing.
