A former detective revealed that a police chief once threatened to halt the investigation that ultimately led to the capture of the killer highlighted in a recent Netflix series. The killer, Robert Napper, murdered Rachel Nickell in 1992 while she was walking with her son in Wimbledon Common. Despite being suspected in a series of rapes, Napper evaded detection until he went on to kill Samantha Bissett and her daughter in 1993.
The breakthrough in apprehending Napper came after a close call when the investigation was almost shut down due to a lack of progress. The detective in charge initially wanted to abandon the case, but his subordinate insisted on continuing, emphasizing the urgency of capturing the perpetrator.
Napper’s criminal history included numerous assaults on women along London’s Green Chain, leading to his eventual arrest in connection with the double murder. Despite prior reports implicating Napper in earlier crimes, authorities failed to connect the dots, allowing him to evade capture multiple times.
Following Napper’s arrest, forensic evidence eventually linked him to the murders, leading to his conviction in 2008 for Rachel Nickell’s death. The case shed light on missed opportunities and investigative oversights that could have prevented the tragic outcomes.
