“Driver Jailed for Fatal Crash at Service Station”

A motorist veered off the A1 highway and crashed into a service station, tragically causing the death of a beloved 20-year-old student. The driver, Fiona Phippen, was sentenced to four years and three months in prison for the incident.

The collision occurred at Foston Services near Grantham, Lincolnshire, in June 2024. Phippen, traveling at speeds of up to 51mph, struck Urwah Tanveer, a psychology student, who was standing near her family’s stationary Mercedes. Phippen, residing in Great Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire, admitted guilt in April to charges of causing death and serious injury through dangerous driving.

During the court proceedings at Lincoln Crown Court, it was revealed that Urwah was planning her graduation ceremony before the tragic accident. CCTV footage presented to the jury showed the moment Phippen’s Nissan Qashqai hit Urwah, leading to her eventual passing in the hospital a day later.

Judge Simon Hirst learned that Phippen narrowly avoided hitting Urwah’s brother and caused injuries to her 83-year-old grandmother inside the Mercedes. Phippen claimed she was distracted by another vehicle on the A1 just before the collision, despite the clear road conditions that day.

Urwah, a student at Queen Mary’s University in London with aspirations to work in the NHS, was described as a bright and promising individual. Evidence in court indicated that Phippen was using cruise control and failed to decelerate after leaving the highway, maintaining a consistent speed between 41mph and 51mph.

During sentencing, Judge Hirst highlighted that a six-minute video call on Phippen’s mobile phone ended just before the crash, emphasizing her lack of awareness while driving. Phippen was also banned from driving for over seven years.

Urwah’s family shared their heart-wrenching victim impact statements, expressing their profound grief and loss. Urwah’s mother, an NHS worker, emotionally spoke of the trauma and devastation caused by the incident, emphasizing the lifelong impact of losing her daughter.

In a powerful statement directed at Phippen, the grieving mother conveyed the profound and enduring pain inflicted on their family by the tragic events.
