Alpine’s Appeal Reverses Gasly’s Penalties, Alters Podium Finish

Isack Hadjar lost his first Red Bull podium finish post-Monaco Grand Prix as Alpine successfully appealed. Pierre Gasly’s two five-second penalties were overturned, moving him back to third place and pushing Hadjar down to fourth in the final rankings. Gasly, penalized for speeding in the pit lane, claimed he had activated his speed limiter in time and was upset about missing out on the podium.

Post-race, Alpine submitted a Right of Review request to the FIA, leading to a hearing in Barcelona. The review deemed Alpine’s evidence significant and new, supported by Formula One Management’s data showing inaccuracies in speed measurements. Gasly’s penalties were the only ones overturned due to Alpine being the sole team to request a review.

Following the hearing’s conclusion, Gasly’s third-place finish was reinstated on Friday. Alpine expressed gratitude for the FIA’s decision and Formula One Management’s cooperation. The focus now shifts to the upcoming Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix for the team.

The stewards explained that Gasly did not exceed the pit lane speed limit and rescinded his penalties. While Gasly benefited from the review, other drivers penalized for the same reason will retain their penalties as served penalties cannot be appealed post-race.

There is no provision for stewards to reverse served penalties, and no other team initiated a Right of Review within the allowed timeframe. Gasly’s case highlighted a faulty timing system, impacting race results for penalized drivers.
