A mother has recounted experiencing a harrowing situation after being informed that a stranger had picked up her daughter from the nursery. Jody Riley, 37, in Formby, received a distressing call from Kids Planet Crosby while working at a nearby café. According to Jody, the staff member took some time to explain that someone had taken her daughter, Rosie McDonald, but reassured her that Rosie had been safely returned to the nursery. The incident left Jody in a state of panic and shock as she rushed to retrieve her child.
It was later revealed that a grandfather of another child mistakenly took Rosie, who was asleep, without anyone realizing the error for at least 10 minutes. Jody expressed confusion over how the man managed to bypass security measures, enter the toddler room, and drive off with Rosie without detection. She emphasized the unsettling feeling of not knowing how long Rosie was missing before the mistake was noticed.
Jody, who, along with her partner Gary McDonald, runs their own businesses, typically picks up Rosie from the nursery in the afternoons. She described the security measures in place, including facial recognition technology, that should have prevented such an incident. However, Jody was dismayed by the lack of oversight that allowed the man to leave with Rosie unnoticed.
Following the distressing ordeal, Jody decided to keep Rosie out of the nursery for the time being and care for her full-time. She expressed concern about the impact on her work-life balance and the difficulty of securing a new nursery placement for Rosie. Despite Rosie appearing unharmed, Jody admitted feeling shaken by the incident.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Kids Planet confirmed the mistake, stating that the child was promptly returned and that they were providing support to the families involved. The nursery has implemented additional security measures and is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. They have also taken steps to revise policies and enhance staff training to prevent similar incidents in the future. Cooperation with regulatory authorities, including Ofsted and the Local Authority Designated Officer, has been initiated as part of the ongoing investigation.
