“7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Philippines, Tsunami Alerts Issued”

Videos capturing the collapse of structures and the panicked cries of locals during a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines circulated on social media today.

Following a significant earthquake near Mindanao, the Philippines, a tsunami alert has been issued for the region, according to the US Tsunami Warning System. The earthquake, measuring an estimated 7.8 magnitude, struck Davao City around 7:40 am local time on Monday, June 8, 2026. Residents felt intense tremors, prompting building evacuations as a safety measure.

Tsunami warnings have been put in place for various areas including the Philippines, the West coast of the United States, Indonesia, Palau, Yap, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea. Social media footage captured buildings crumbling.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has lifted its tsunami watch for the country and its territories. The cancellation was announced by the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) at 10:38 am AEST.

The BoM stated, “A 7.8 magnitude undersea earthquake occurred near Mindanao, Philippines at 9:37 am AEST on Monday, June 8, 2026. No imminent tsunami threats have been detected for the Australian mainland, islands, or territories.” The tsunami watch for Australia has been terminated, with no further updates unless the situation changes.

In a video, the Plaza building in Sarangani, housing LOVE Radio Gensan and DZRH News FM, collapsed dramatically during the earthquake, causing nearby pedestrians to scream in terror as dust filled the air.
