“Lammy Backs Starmer Over Burnham in Leadership Contest”

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has expressed his backing for Keir Starmer in a potential leadership contest against Andy Burnham. Lammy described Starmer as the most resilient individual he has ever encountered. Burnham recently announced his intention to enter a leadership race following the Makerfield by-election on June 18.

Starmer has emphasized his determination to face any challengers and reiterated his commitment to staying in the political arena. Lammy, who played a key role in Starmer’s leadership campaign, affirmed that Starmer, having received a mandate from the public less than two years ago, would participate in any competition if the required 81 signatures are obtained.

While stressing the importance of Starmer fulfilling his mandate, Lammy refrained from advising Burnham on his course of action, citing a regular dialogue between them. Starmer has reaffirmed his resolve to remain in his role, citing the current global challenges as a reason to avoid internal conflicts within the Labour Party.

Burnham has confirmed his readiness to engage in a leadership challenge upon his return to Parliament, provided he secures the necessary support from 81 colleagues. Wes Streeting, a former Health Secretary, has also declared his intention to participate in such a contest. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister emphasized his commitment to fulfilling the electoral mandate until 2024 and cautioned against internal strife that could detract from crucial national decision-making.
