“European Leaders Unite with Zelensky Against Putin’s Aggression”

Keir Starmer commended Volodymyr Zelensky’s actions to halt the ongoing conflict with Russia and criticized Vladimir Putin’s relentless barrage of missile and drone strikes on urban areas. The UK Prime Minister, along with French President Emmanuel Macron and German politician Friedrich Merz, convened at No10 with the Ukrainian leader to formulate a five-point strategy for peace, responding to Zelensky’s resolute stance that Ukraine will not succumb quietly.

The leaders convened as Putin’s military forces persisted in attacking Ukraine following an impasse in peace negotiations. Putin rebuffed Zelensky’s proposal for face-to-face talks, dismissing the meeting as pointless. Recently, a Russian drone attack inflicted damage on a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which Zelensky condemned as a reprehensible act by Russia.

The trio of European leaders outlined steps toward peace, emphasizing an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire as the primary measure. They called for diplomatic negotiations to commence, affirming the importance of respecting international borders and Ukraine’s right to determine its security arrangements. Furthermore, they stressed the necessity of providing Ukraine with robust security assurances and the deployment of a multinational force, while demanding that Russian assets remain frozen until Putin halts hostilities and compensates for damages.

Safeguarding European security interests in any agreement was highlighted as the fifth crucial point. The leaders acknowledged recent Ukrainian military achievements and condemned Russia’s extensive missile and drone assaults on Ukrainian cities, expressing condolences for civilian casualties. They endorsed Zelensky’s call for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and proposed direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, supported by the US and European nations to achieve a ceasefire and facilitate further negotiations.

The UK, France, and Germany stand as staunch allies of Kyiv, leading a coalition willing to provide security guarantees if a peace accord is reached. The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Rafael Grossi raised concerns over the drone strike near Chernobyl, while Zelensky emphasized the need for concrete actions to make Russia realize the repercussions of its aggressive actions.

Zelensky is scheduled to meet with the King on Monday, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of Ukraine’s allies. A significant Ukrainian drone attack on St. Petersburg underscored Kyiv’s increased capability to strike deep within Russia, signaling a determination to resist further aggression. British, French, German, and Ukrainian flags adorned Downing Street in anticipation of the high-level meeting.

Tragically, a Russian drone strike claimed three lives at a bus stop in southeastern Ukraine, with another individual injured. In a retaliatory attack, one person was killed and another injured in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhia region. These incidents reflect the escalating violence and tensions in the region, highlighting the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
