David Lammy has challenged US Vice President JD Vance for his criticism of the UK regarding Henry Nowak’s death, asserting that Vance’s statements were inaccurate. The Deputy Prime Minister disclosed that he had conversed with Vance, a friend of his, on Saturday and rebuffed Vance’s claims attributing the tragedy to mass migration. Lammy clarified that Henry’s death was unrelated to mass migration and highlighted ongoing investigations into the police’s handling of the incident.
Vance had previously asserted that Henry would still be alive if not for what he described as the “politics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants.” The public reacted strongly after distressing footage emerged showing Henry pleading with police about being stabbed and struggling to breathe, only to be dismissed.
The individual responsible for Henry’s death, Vickrum Digwa, misled officers by falsely alleging racial abuse. Lammy, speaking on Sky News, emphasized the progress of the judicial system in convicting Digwa and the ongoing inquiries by relevant authorities into the police conduct surrounding the case.
During their discussion, Lammy disagreed with Vance’s stance, emphasizing that the incident was not connected to mass migration as Henry’s killer was British. Despite their differing views, Lammy described the conversation as amicable but underscored the importance of presenting factual information.
When asked about Vance’s response to his assertions, Lammy mentioned that Vance expressed concerns about what he termed as Western values being under threat both in the US and Europe. Lammy acknowledged their differing perspectives on this issue but highlighted the cordial conclusion of their conversation.
Lammy also advised Vance against making divisive tweets, emphasizing the importance of respecting the wishes of the Nowak family for unity and sensible dialogue. Keir Starmer, in support of this sentiment, emphasized the need for unity and progress to honor Henry’s memory, stating his commitment to learning from the tragedy.
The Prime Minister expressed his deep respect for Henry’s family and his determination to ensure that lessons are learned from the case to prevent similar tragedies. The ongoing investigation into Hampshire Police’s handling of the stabbing, including the release of bodycam footage revealing the initial disbelief of the victim, remains a focal point of scrutiny.
Nigel Farage’s recent comments on the incident, calling for anger and alleging two-tier policing, have added to the ongoing discussions surrounding Henry Nowak’s death. Lammy’s interaction with Vance reflects the broader dialogue on immigration, law enforcement, and societal values in the wake of this tragic event.
