“Driver’s Cocaine-Fueled Crash Injures Officer: Prison Sentence Issued”

A driver under the influence of cocaine and alcohol caused a collision with a police vehicle, resulting in severe injuries to an officer, who has now been incarcerated. Shaun Orchard, aged 23, received a sentence of three years and two months following the incident in Stockport on April 22 last year. The officer, identified as PC Rushton, sustained significant injuries and expressed a profound change in his life due to the crash.

Orchard took his stepfather’s car after consuming alcohol and cocaine in a pub. The pursuit started when Robert Hyde noticed his Mercedes missing after Orchard’s mother urgently called him to return the vehicle. Police located Orchard and engaged in a high-speed chase through Stockport, where he recklessly drove at speeds exceeding 120mph on the M60.

Upon exiting the motorway, Orchard continued at speeds around 100mph on Hyde Road, eventually colliding with PC Rushton’s vehicle at a crossroads. PC Rushton suffered multiple injuries, including fractured ribs, a complex ankle fracture, and other severe wounds requiring medical attention at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

In his statement to the court, PC Rushton described the profound impact of the crash on his physical and emotional well-being, highlighting the lasting trauma and challenges he faces. He emphasized the drastic shift in his life post-collision, expressing deep emotional distress and physical limitations hindering his daily activities.

Orchard’s defense attorney acknowledged the gravity of the situation, expressing Orchard’s regret for his actions and the life-altering consequences of his reckless driving. The court revealed Orchard’s high levels of alcohol and benzoylecgonine in his bloodstream at the time of the incident, indicating substantial impairment.

Judge Kevin Slack emphasized the deliberate disregard for road safety displayed by Orchard, leading to the severe injuries inflicted upon PC Rushton. Orchard was sentenced to imprisonment and a lengthy driving ban for causing serious harm through dangerous driving.

Detective Constable Adrian Beckford condemned Orchard’s reckless behavior, highlighting the potential fatal outcomes of his actions and the significant risks posed to the public and law enforcement during the pursuit. The officer’s injuries were described as severe and likely to have lasting effects, underscoring the daily dangers faced by law enforcement in ensuring public safety.
