“Outrage as Whales Slaughtered in Brutal Faroe Islands Tradition”

Hundreds of magnificent whales have once again been mercilessly slaughtered in the Faroe Islands as the cruel historical tradition persists. The sea turns crimson as the lifeless bodies of the creatures lie on the shore, following their brutal stabbing in front of a large crowd, including young children. This ruthless practice, known as ‘grindadrap,’ is a Viking cultural ritual where pilot whales and dolphins are herded into shallow waters to meet their demise.

After being brought close to the shore by boats, the terrified animals are stranded before fishermen use blades to kill them. The Faroese defend the culling, claiming it is sustainable and legally regulated, while activist groups advocate for the prohibition of these brutal hunts.

The tragic incident occurred over 200 miles north of Scotland, in the bay of Hvalvik on Streymoy Island, marking the second ‘grind’ of 2026. During the first grind of the year near the village of Sándavágur on Vágar island, more than 125 pilot whales and several dolphins were slaughtered. Sea Shepherd’s Campaign Director Valentina Crast, who witnessed the event, highlighted the indiscriminate killing of pregnant females and young whales in these hunts.

In the past, Sea Shepherd has monitored these killings and even offered a significant sum to the Faroe Islands to halt the whale hunts. The participation of the public and tourists in these events has been noted, with families and children observing the distressing scenes on the killing beach.

Participants in the grind energetically entered the pod to begin the slaughter, despite the process being far from humane. Children were seen playing with the carcasses, displaying disturbing behavior around the traditional knives used in the grindadrap.
