“Teen’s Gift of Life: Organs Save Three Lives”

A young man generously donated his organs to save the lives of three individuals after experiencing a severe epileptic seizure.

Patrick Leonard, an 18-year-old, was motivated by his school’s head of Sixth Form, who shared his own experience as a bone marrow and stem cell donor. Inspired by this, Patrick expressed his wish to donate his organs to help others in the event of his passing.

Tragically, on August 26 of the previous year, Patrick suffered a catastrophic seizure that left him brain dead. His selfless decision benefitted three individuals on the transplant list – a man in his 20s received his lungs, while a man in his 40s and a woman in her 50s each received one of his kidneys.

Following his son’s passing, Christopher, Patrick’s father, expressed immense pride in his son’s altruistic act. He mentioned that honoring Patrick’s wish to be an organ donor brought comfort during such a heartbreaking time.

Patrick’s journey with epilepsy began in 2024, coinciding with the onset of depression. Despite facing health challenges, he remained positive and was dedicated to his studies. His family believes that his depression might have been an early indicator of his epilepsy.

Over time, Patrick’s health struggles led to missed school days, prompting him to complete his A-levels through online courses. Despite the hardships, he maintained a grateful outlook on life.

In August 2025, during a medical appointment, Patrick was informed about the risks associated with SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). His family, unaware of the severity of the condition, supported him in his treatment and care.

Tragically, on August 26, Patrick experienced another seizure that led to catastrophic brain damage. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, it became evident that he would not recover.

Patrick’s family, including his mother Hermione and sister Darcy, found solace in his desire to help others through organ donation. By sharing his story, they raised funds for the Anthony Nolan Trust, reflecting Patrick’s compassionate nature.

The introduction of Max and Keira’s Law, an opt-out organ donation legislation, brought hope for those in need of organ transplants. This law assumes individuals’ willingness to donate organs unless they specifically decline, potentially saving countless lives.

Patrick’s untimely passing shed light on the importance of organ donation and the reality of epilepsy-related risks, underscoring the need for greater awareness and support for affected individuals and their families.
