UK Man Dies in Fuerteventura Helicopter Rescue

A man from the UK tragically passed away in Fuerteventura following a daring helicopter rescue from the sea. The incident occurred at Playa del Águila, also referred to as Playa de La Escalera, located in the La Oliva municipality in the northern region of the Canary Island. Emergency responders were alerted around 5:30 pm on Thursday after receiving reports of two individuals struggling in the water near the beach.

Rescuers from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) spotted the man using a helicopter and quickly airlifted him to safety. Despite efforts to revive him with CPR during the transit to a nearby landing area, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Medical personnel and local authorities made further attempts to resuscitate him on the ground without success.

The second swimmer managed to exit the water unaided and received medical attention on the beach, declining hospital transport after initial treatment. The rescue operation involved lifeguards, maritime rescue teams, Civil Protection volunteers, local police, and firefighters. An official investigation is underway by the Civil Guard to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Playa del Águila, a remote beach on Fuerteventura’s rugged northwest coastline, showcases stunning natural beauty with golden sands, azure waters, and striking volcanic cliffs. Accessible via a steep staircase named La Escalera, the beach is known for its wild and untouched allure. Notably, the area lacks amenities such as lifeguards, restrooms, beach facilities, or rental services.

Efforts to obtain a statement from the Foreign Office by the Mirror are ongoing.
