Ukraine’s military intelligence officials have issued a cautionary alert regarding potential Russian missile attacks on the country’s power infrastructure, warning of a possible scenario akin to the Chernobyl disaster. Ukrainian experts have expressed concerns that Russian strikes on substations connected to nuclear power plants could result in a catastrophic event not witnessed since 1986.
Serhiy Beskrestnov, an expert in electronic warfare, highlighted the proximity of key substations to nuclear facilities, with some located as close as less than a kilometer away from reactors, and in certain instances, only 300 meters away from a nuclear plant. Beskrestnov emphasized that a Russian strike missing its target on such a substation could lead to severe consequences, potentially echoing the tragic events of Chernobyl.
The combination of Russian strikes on these critical substations, aimed at inducing a nationwide blackout, coupled with their historical inaccuracies in hitting intended targets, poses a significant threat, as per Beskrestnov’s analysis. There have been instances where Russian weaponry has struck civilian structures instead of military or industrial targets, heightening the risk of unintended devastation.
Reports suggest that Russia is contemplating assaults on electricity transmission substations supporting Ukraine’s nuclear power plants as part of coercive tactics to compel Kyiv to agree to unfavorable terms. Ukrainian Military Intelligence (HUR) has disclosed that Russian forces conducted reconnaissance on ten vital energy sites across nine Ukrainian regions by mid-January 2026. The objective appears to be to disrupt Ukraine’s power supply for an extended period, potentially lasting weeks or even months.
Amidst these alarming developments, Ukrainians are being advised to brace for potential disruptions while acknowledging the unpredictability of Russian attacks on critical infrastructure. The uncertainty surrounding the country’s ability to defend against such strikes further underscores the urgent need for preparedness at all levels.
In response to the looming threat, Ukrainian parliament member Victoria Voytsitska, a member of the energy and nuclear safety committee, expressed skepticism about Russia’s ability to simultaneously incapacitate the Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, and South Ukraine nuclear power plants, which play a vital role in the country’s power grid stability.
