Donald Trump commended the valor of British soldiers who served in Afghanistan after his remarks questioning the frontline involvement of NATO troops caused a stir.
The US president, posting on Truth Social, lauded British soldiers as “among the greatest of all warriors,” recognizing the 457 armed services members who lost their lives and many others who suffered severe injuries during the intense conflict.
In his message, Trump emphasized the unwavering bond between the United States and the United Kingdom, praising the UK Military for its exceptional dedication and spirit, ranking it second only to the US forces. He conveyed his love and everlasting support for the soldiers, signing off as President Donald J. Trump.
Trump’s seeming reversal followed his recent statements on Fox News where he expressed uncertainty about NATO’s commitment if needed, highlighting that NATO troops, including British soldiers, were not at the forefront during the Afghanistan mission.
Sir Keir Starmer strongly criticized Trump’s comments, calling them “insulting and frankly appalling,” and urged for an apology. Starmer emphasized his deep respect for the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers and their families.
While Starmer acknowledged the significance of the UK’s alliance with the US for national security, he underscored that the partnership led to joint efforts in Afghanistan to uphold shared values and protect freedom, despite the losses and injuries suffered.
The 20-year Afghanistan conflict claimed the lives of 3,486 NATO troops, with 2,461 being US service members. Canada reported 165 fatalities, including civilians.
