The aftermath of the tragic events at Bondi Beach is still making waves globally, with new victims being identified as Australia deals with the aftermath of the horrific attack targeting the Jewish community. Sajid and Naveed Akram, a father and son aged 50 and 24, have been revealed as the perpetrators of the attack on December 14 during a Hanukkah celebration, resulting in the deaths of 16 individuals and leaving many injured, including four in critical condition. Australian authorities suspect the assault may have been inspired by ISIS.
Authorities in New South Wales are looking into a recent trip the Akram pair took to the Philippines, as confirmed by Manila officials. Police Chief Mal Lanyon disclosed that IEDs and homemade ISIS flags were found in a vehicle registered to the younger Akram at the scene of the shooting. The purpose of their trip to the Philippines and their activities there are currently under investigation.
The 24-year-old Akram, who was critically injured in a confrontation with the police that led to his father’s death, has now come out of a coma and is cooperating with authorities. He is anticipated to face serious charges related to the attack, with authorities indicating no other individuals are believed to have been involved. As investigations progress, families are mourning the loss of victims, some of whom have been publicly identified.
Among those identified are Rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, who was tragically killed during the attack. Matilda Poltavchenko, a 10-year-old girl, was also a victim of the gunmen. Another hero, Reuven Morrison, 61, valiantly tried to stop the attack. Tibor Weitzen, 78, and Alex Kleytman, 87, lost their lives while shielding others. French national Dan Elkayam, 27, and Peter Meagher, a retired NSW policeman, were also among the victims. Rabbi Yaakov Levitin and Marika Pogany, 82, were also tragically killed in the incident.
The community is in mourning over the loss of these individuals, who were dedicated members and loved ones. Their memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew them.
