Nicola Sturgeon expressed deep shock over her estranged husband’s confession to embezzling over £400,000 from the SNP to fund his extravagant lifestyle. Peter Murrell, the party’s former chief executive, admitted diverting party funds for personal use, splurging on expensive items like a luxury motorhome, watches, pens, and other indulgences.
Court records revealed that Murrell manipulated invoices to acquire high-end vehicles and spent substantial amounts on various personal expenses, including modest purchases like hand cream and takeaway items. Following his arrest in April 2023 as part of Operation Branchform, a police inquiry into SNP finances, Murrell was formally charged in April 2024.
Appearing in court, Murrell pled guilty to embezzlement charges spanning 12 years and was subsequently remanded in custody pending sentencing on June 23. The shocking revelations have rattled the SNP, prompting party leader John Swinney to apologize for the profound disappointment and breach of trust caused by Murrell’s actions.
Sturgeon, who was married to Murrell for 15 years before their separation, expressed deep pain over the betrayal by her former spouse. She emphasized her lack of awareness regarding the misuse of party funds and condemned Murrell’s actions. The scandal involving one of the UK’s influential political couples has sent shockwaves through the SNP and the political landscape.
Murrell’s attorney entered the guilty plea on his behalf, acknowledging the gross breach of trust stemming from his prolonged embezzlement scheme. Law enforcement officials described the case as complex due to the extensive financial misconduct and efforts to conceal the illicit activities. Murrell’s abuse of his position and the misappropriation of party funds to sustain his extravagant lifestyle underscore the severity of his actions, leading to inevitable consequences.
