A man fatally attacked his mother with a knife while experiencing schizophrenic delusions. Daniel Cook repeatedly stabbed his mother, Ellen Cook, 72, in a violent incident that unfolded in the street, where neighbors and his father tried to intervene as the attack continued.
Leicester Crown Court revealed details of the tragic event as Daniel Cook faced sentencing for manslaughter. Three psychologists confirmed his schizophrenia diagnosis and his delusional belief that his mother was a witch.
At the time, Cook, 39, resided in Ashby and operated an online book-selling business. He expressed a desire to return to his parents’ residence in Littlethorpe, near Leicester.
During a family gathering, Ellen Cook informed her son that she opposed him moving back in with her and her husband in Biddle Road, Littlethorpe. Subsequently, a distressing incident occurred in the family home, leading to a fatal confrontation between Daniel Cook and his mother.
Following the attack, Cook’s father and neighbors attempted to intervene as Cook continued to harm his mother, despite their efforts to stop him. Police were alerted by concerned neighbors witnessing the violent episode.
Cook’s father pleaded with him to cease his assault, but Cook callously expressed his desire for his mother’s demise, blaming her for his troubles. Police bodycam footage captured the chaotic scene as officers struggled to restrain Cook, who was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
Tragically, Ellen Cook succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Cook, who admitted to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility, had a history of psychological issues and had previously threatened his mother with a knife.
During sentencing, the court heard emotional victim impact statements from Cook’s sisters, expressing concerns about his potential release and the impact on their safety. The judge sentenced Cook to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years before parole eligibility, under a hybrid order that entails medical treatment in a hospital setting until deemed fit for transfer to prison.
