“Retirement Home Manager Jailed for Swindling £20K”

A woman in charge of a retirement home has been sentenced to prison for swindling an 88-year-old lady out of over £20,000. The culprit, Stephanie White, hoodwinked the elderly woman into believing she was assisting with bill payments, but instead, she pocketed the money by writing checks to herself. The fraudulent activities came to light when the victim fell ill and was hospitalized. White, aged 58, embezzled a total of £21,697.79 from April 2022 to October 2023. During the investigation, evidence such as bank statements and handwritten notes related to White’s beauty business were discovered by the victim’s family, where some of the misappropriated funds were channeled.

Despite being a trusted figure at the retirement home, White denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the money was either a gift, loan, or payment for shopping services rendered to the victim. Eventually, she admitted to fraud by abusing her position before the trial. The victim’s family expressed deep distress, stating that the stolen money represented years of hard work by the victim and her late husband, meant to ensure financial security in retirement. They emphasized the emotional turmoil inflicted on their grandmother and the family due to White’s betrayal of trust.

Stephanie White received a prison sentence of two years and ten months for her actions. Detective Constable Vicky Holt, from the Vulnerable Adults (VA) team, condemned White’s exploitation of the elderly and vulnerable woman for personal financial gain, highlighting the breach of trust and care that White had perpetrated.
