A recent report by the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) has unveiled the financial requirements for a comfortable retirement, emphasizing that many individuals are not saving adequately. The PLSA has updated its figures outlining the amounts needed for a minimum, moderate, and comfortable retirement standards.
For a basic retirement lifestyle, a single person should budget £13,900 annually, while a couple would require £22,500 per year. This standard includes covering essential expenses with a bit leftover for leisure activities like occasional dining out or domestic vacations.
Moving up the scale, a moderate retirement lifestyle would cost £32,700 for a single person and £45,400 for a couple each year. This level provides more financial stability and flexibility, allowing for additional luxuries such as Mediterranean holidays and more frequent dining out.
To achieve a comfortable retirement, a single person should aim for £45,400 annually, with a two-person household needing £62,700 a year. This higher amount affords increased financial freedom and access to indulgences like higher-end holidays and additional leisure spending.
Pensions UK estimates that approximately 82% of the UK’s workforce will reach the minimum retirement living standard, but only 23% will achieve a moderate lifestyle, and just 9% will enjoy a comfortable retirement. Notably, housing costs are not factored into these standards due to the variability based on location and personal circumstances.
These figures, developed by the Centre for Research in Social Policy at Loughborough University in collaboration with the PLSA, underscore the current inadequacy of retirement savings for many individuals. Zoe Alexander from Pensions UK emphasized the urgency for action to prevent a significant drop in income post-retirement.
Professor Matt Padley from Loughborough University highlighted the importance of the Retirement Living Standards as a benchmark to guide state, employer, and individual contributions towards ensuring a minimum standard of living in retirement for all.
