Minnesota Sues Trump Admin Over ICE Enforcement Surge

Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul have taken legal action against the Trump administration regarding an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) enforcement surge that occurred after a woman was fatally shot by an ICE officer.

The state and cities filed a lawsuit in federal court, alleging that the Department of Homeland Security’s actions are in violation of constitutional protections, including the First Amendment. They are seeking a temporary restraining order to either halt the enforcement operation or impose limits on its scope.

During a news conference, Attorney General Keith Ellison expressed concerns, stating that the increased presence of federal agents in Minnesota constitutes a form of “federal invasion” that must be stopped. He criticized the conduct of these agents, describing them as poorly trained, aggressive, and armed individuals who have engaged in unlawful activities throughout the state.

Homeland Security has announced plans to deploy over 2,000 immigration officers to Minnesota, with more than 2,000 arrests having been made since December as part of what ICE has labeled its largest enforcement operation to date.

The lawsuit accuses the Trump administration of targeting Minnesota due to its Democratic leanings, alleging a violation of free speech rights. In response, a Homeland Security spokesperson defended the administration’s actions, emphasizing its duty to uphold the law and ensure public safety, regardless of political affiliations.

Another lawsuit has been filed against the government in Illinois for a similar enforcement crackdown called “Operation Midway Blitz,” which resulted in the arrest of over 4,300 individuals last year in the Chicago area. The lawsuit claims that this operation instilled fear in residents, deterring them from leaving their homes or accessing public services.

Separately, federal officers dispersed a crowd with tear gas in Minneapolis following a car crash involving immigration agents. The incident occurred near the location where Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother-of-three, was fatally shot by an ICE agent. While the administration has portrayed Good as a domestic terrorist, her family, friends, and neighbors remember her as a gentle and kind-hearted individual.

Good, along with her son and wife, had recently moved to Minneapolis from Kansas City, Missouri. She was known for her passion for writing and family life, as depicted on her social media accounts.

Criticism of the shooting continues, with state and local officials rejecting the administration’s claims of self-defense. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has denounced the argument as baseless, and Governor Tim Walz, along with his wife Gwen, paid respects at a memorial honoring Good at the site of the tragic incident.
