Greenlanders Protest Trump’s Annexation Plans

Protests have broken out in Greenland and Denmark in opposition to Donald Trump’s repeated intentions to annex the island territory. The US President threatened to impose additional tariffs on countries that do not support his annexation plans. In Greenland’s capital Nuuk, large crowds of protesters took to the streets, waving the island territory’s red and white flag and asserting that it is not for sale. While Trump argues that US ownership of Greenland is crucial for national security, Denmark strongly opposes this claim, stating that the US has authorization to station more troops on the island but will not engage in trading individuals with Washington DC.

Expressing his discontent, Trump announced plans to impose a 10% tariff on the UK and other nations that challenge his annexation ambitions, with a potential increase to 25% by June 1 until an agreement is reached for the complete purchase of Greenland. In response, Keir Starmer emphasized that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, with its future to be determined by the Greenlanders and Danes. He emphasized the importance of Arctic Security for NATO and urged allies to collaborate against threats in the Arctic region. Starmer criticized the imposition of tariffs on allies pursuing collective NATO security, stating that such actions are unjust and will be addressed directly with the US administration.

A survey conducted in January 2025 by Verian revealed that the vast majority of Greenlanders support independence or remaining part of Denmark, with only six percent in favor of joining the US. Any attempt to acquire Greenland forcibly, a territory of NATO member Denmark, would necessitate intervention by NATO allies.

Greenlanders in Nuuk made their opposition to US involvement clear, advocating for independence or continued affiliation with Denmark. Greenland, historically under Danish sovereignty, has seen a growing desire for self-governance. Demonstrations in Copenhagen also highlighted disapproval of Trump’s stance, emphasizing Denmark’s role as a steadfast ally to the US. Greenland, having been a self-governing entity within Denmark since 2009, continues to navigate its future amidst geopolitical tensions.
