“Double Tragedy Inspires Water Safety Campaign”

A family faced a devastating double tragedy when two relatives passed away in the same river. They are now supporting The Mirror’s initiative following recent tragic drownings. Grandfather Michael Scott was shocked when he received a frantic call from his daughter, Zoe, reporting that his sixteen-year-old grandson, Tyler Wilson, was in the river. Tyler, a proficient swimmer, tragically drowned near Methley Bridge in Castleford, West Yorkshire, succumbing to cold water shock after entering the River Aire and Calder on May 24, 2023.

Nearly 12 years prior, Michael’s younger brother, Andrew Scott, who couldn’t swim, lost his life while attempting to cross some stepping stones. His niece, also Tyler’s mother, was present at both tragic incidents. Michael, a former miner, emphasized water safety to Tyler due to his brother’s fate, but the warning went unheeded. The family was devastated as history repeated itself.

After Tyler’s body was found in the river, the family was overwhelmed with grief. Tyler’s mother, Zoe, described the harrowing experience of identifying her son’s lifeless body. The family continues to struggle with the profound loss, with the pain and heartache being a daily burden.

The Mirror has launched the ‘Save Lives for Sam campaign’ to address the alarming rate of drownings in the UK. Various organizations and public figures have joined forces with the campaign to raise awareness and push for government action to prevent further tragedies. Tyler’s family is actively supporting the cause, advocating for increased education and awareness, especially among young people who may underestimate the dangers of water activities.

As they mourn Tyler’s untimely death, the family urges others to prioritize water safety and avoid risky behaviors near bodies of water. The devastating impact of such incidents extends far beyond the immediate family, affecting communities and causing immense grief. The call for action to prevent further drownings is urgent and essential to spare other families from enduring similar tragedies.
