A bar was attacked by a group of armed individuals who opened fire, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people. The gunmen, believed to number around 12, fled the scene in two vehicles while shooting indiscriminately in the streets. The incident occurred just outside Johannesburg, South Africa, around 1am local time, where the assailants targeted patrons at a local tavern. Apart from the fatalities, 10 civilians were also wounded in the shooting. The attackers arrived at the tavern in Bekkersdal, a town located 25 miles southwest of Johannesburg, and unleashed gunfire on the patrons before fleeing, continuing to shoot randomly.
South Africa has a notably high murder rate, standing at 45 per 100,000 individuals, according to data provided by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
