Russia and Ukraine have escalated cross-border assaults following unsuccessful peace negotiations between Washington and Moscow, with Vladimir Putin issuing a warning that the Kremlin is prepared for conflict with Europe. In Ukraine, two individuals lost their lives as a result of missile and drone attacks from Russia, leading to power outages and leaving numerous people without heating.
In retaliation, Ukraine launched pre-dawn missile and drone strikes on two significant Russian oil facilities, igniting fires in the Tambov and Voronezh regions. Moscow’s air defense officials reported that Ukraine deployed at least 102 kamikaze drones, which were subsequently intercepted and neutralized over Russian airspace.
These events transpired subsequent to a Russian strike on the central market in Kramatorsk, Donetsk on November 29, resulting in a substantial blaze as depicted in images from the scene.
For several months, Kyiv has been targeting Vladimir Putin’s financial backing of the conflict in Ukraine, which relies heavily on energy exports. Putin’s recent statement emphasized that while Russia is not actively seeking war with Europe, it is fully prepared to respond if provoked.
Prior to a failed peace summit in Moscow involving US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, Ukrainian strikes targeted oil depots in Russia’s Tambov and Voronezh regions, causing fires as part of efforts to disrupt Putin’s financial support for the war.
Russia retaliated by attacking energy infrastructure in four Ukrainian regions using drones and missiles, resulting in widespread power outages and numerous casualties. Tens of thousands of individuals in various regions were left without electricity, including over 17,500 consumers in Kharkiv, around 5,000 in Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia, and residents in the Kherson region.
Despite five hours of discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump’s senior negotiator failing to yield a breakthrough, diplomatic efforts persist, with Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner participating in the talks. The primary disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv involve territorial concessions by Ukraine, restrictions on NATO membership, and military limitations, all of which European leaders have resisted in a revised peace proposal that Russia has rejected.
Sources indicate that the initial proposal originated from the Kremlin, with Trump suggesting it as a starting point for negotiations following European opposition. However, Putin may have been misinformed about the progress of his troops in the conflict, as Kyiv refutes Moscow’s claims of capturing the key city of Pokrovsk.
