Several households in Hastings faced disruptions on Christmas Day due to a burst water main, causing a loss of running water. Southern Water reported that approximately 100 customers experienced low pressure or a complete lack of water supply in postcodes TN34, TN35, TN37, and TN38. The issue was attributed to low water levels at Fairlight Reservoir and a power outage at Brede Water Supply Works.
Southern Water has taken steps to address the situation by setting up a bottled water station and providing supplies directly to affected residents. Despite efforts to restore water supply, the company warned of potential ongoing disruptions. The water supply works are currently operational, reducing the risk of further issues, but it may take several days for drinking water storage reservoirs to return to normal levels.
Helena Dollimore, the Labour MP for Hastings and Rye, expressed frustration over the situation, placing blame on Southern Water for the town’s predicament. Tania Flasck, director of water operations at Southern Water, assured residents that efforts were underway to rectify the water supply problem, urging people to use water judiciously to expedite the reservoir refilling process and minimize the risk of future interruptions.
