The individual responsible for the tragic shooting incident at Brown University has been revealed to have been found deceased, likely due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Identified as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, aged 48, police have linked him to the attack that resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others at the prestigious Ivy League institution in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday. Neves Valente, who had pursued a PhD in physics at Brown University approximately 25 years ago, was discovered deceased at a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire. According to a senior official, it appears that some time had passed since his passing.
Neves Valente was also sought in connection with the killing of Nuno Loureiro, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who was fatally shot two days later. Following a tip-off from the public referencing a witness account shared on Reddit, law enforcement managed to track down a rental car linked to both crime scenes.
The witness, identified as John in the testimony, recounted observing the suspect unlocking a grey Nissan sedan with Florida plates parked near the Rhode Island Historical Society, adjacent to the Barus and Holley building at Brown University where the shooting transpired.
John recalled encountering the suspect within the Barus and Holley structure around 1:45 pm, after which a pursuit ensued as he followed the suspect, eventually leading to the grey Nissan’s parking spot. Confronting the suspect about his actions, John was met with accusations of harassment without a response as the suspect attempted to evade him.
Footage capturing the vehicle, identified based on John’s Reddit post, directed investigators to a car rental agency in Boston. Surveillance videos depicting the suspect’s face and rental paperwork naming Neves Valente were obtained by authorities. Subsequently, John positively identified the vehicle from CCTV footage.
Law enforcement further corroborated Neves Valente’s attire seen during the car rental transaction on December 1 to that worn by the suspect during the Brown University incident on December 13.
Although Neves Valente had no known connections to the victims at Brown University, he shared a past academic background with the MIT professor from their studies in physics in their native Portugal. The suspect had acquired permanent residency status in the United States in 2017.
The two students who tragically lost their lives were identified as Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman of Uzbek-American descent.
Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha, highlighted numerous unanswered questions concerning the motive, expressing uncertainty regarding the timing, choice of Brown University, selection of victims, and the specific classroom targeted in the attack.
