Owners of a bar at a ski resort are under scrutiny in court following a tragic fire that resulted in the death of 40 individuals and left 116 others injured.
Jacques and Jessica Moretti, proprietors of Le Constellation bar, attended a hearing at the public prosecutor’s office in Sion, Switzerland, today. The fire occurred at the upscale Alpine ski resort of Crans-Montana during a New Year’s celebration, with victims struggling to escape the premises.
The French couple is facing charges of manslaughter due to negligence, negligence causing bodily harm, and negligence leading to arson. They have been summoned for questioning after the blaze claimed the lives of 40 individuals, predominantly teenagers, and left 116 others wounded.
Allegedly, Ms. Moretti fled the scene while trapped patrons cried out for help. Reports from the French outlet Nice Martin indicated that Jessica Moretti, who sustained an arm injury, was captured on security cameras fleeing with the cash register as the establishment was engulfed in flames on New Year’s Day.
According to Italian outlet La Repubblica, Ms. Moretti prioritized escaping with the cash register containing the evening’s proceeds. The publication also mentioned that CCTV footage purportedly showed the co-owner leaving with the cash register containing the day’s earnings in cash.
The fire marked one of the most devastating incidents in Swiss history, with tributes pouring in for the numerous victims. It is suspected that the fire was initiated by candle sparklers being held too close to the ceiling, prompting authorities to investigate whether the ceiling material designed for sound insulation complied with regulations.
Two witnesses informed French broadcaster BFMTV that they saw a male bartender lifting a female colleague on his shoulders while she held a lit sparkler on a bottle, leading to the spread of flames and the collapse of the wooden ceiling.
Efforts to escape from the basement nightclub area through a narrow door and up a flight of stairs caused a surge of people, contributing to the high number of injuries. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 39 years old, including Charlotte Niddam, who had received education in Britain.
Families have lodged a legal complaint with the Swiss prosecutor’s office. Geneva-based lawyer Romain Jordan stated that each family had filed a complaint and joined the legal proceedings as plaintiffs, with their applications being accepted.
Additionally, Ms. Moretti and her spouse are accused of disabling their social media accounts following the fatal incident. The Le Constellation bar reportedly suspended its social media profiles during the rescue operations.
Authorities are now looking into renovation work carried out in 2015 amid allegations of inadequate safety standards. The investigation will also focus on the use of fire extinguishers and fire exits.
