“Beware the Rise of AI-Driven Computer Worms”

Artificial intelligence experts are cautioning the public to utilize strong passwords and promptly update software on their devices to combat a new type of cyber-threat known as “AI-driven computer worms.” These worms can launch customized attacks on devices, draining processing power and information while seeking out new targets.

Recently, a team from the University of Toronto, led by Nicolas Papernot, demonstrated that publicly available AI models could power a worm capable of adjusting its attack strategies as it spreads across internet-connected devices like laptops, printers, and cameras.

The research, done in collaboration with the Vector Institute, was shared with national science, security, and defense bodies before publication. Papernot, an associate professor at U of T, emphasized the importance of not ignoring software update prompts and regularly changing passwords at a panel discussion hosted by the university.

These AI-driven worms differ from traditional computer viruses in that they spread autonomously between devices without human intervention. They gather information as they move, exploiting weak points and passwords to infiltrate new machines. This adaptive nature allows them to craft tailored attack strategies for each victim device, making them challenging to counter with traditional security measures.

Papernot highlighted the urgency of addressing cybersecurity hygiene, emphasizing the need for multi-factor authentication, timely software updates, and organizational processes to ensure prompt deployment of software patches.

The lower cost of developing and deploying these AI-driven worms makes them a potent threat, enabling hackers to target a larger number of victims. This shift poses a significant challenge to current defense strategies, as the attackers can leverage stolen computing power from compromised devices, reducing the cost of subsequent attacks to almost zero.

A survey by the Communications Security Establishment found that while a majority of Canadians update their software regularly and use complex passwords, there is room for improvement in maintaining unique passwords consistently. Papernot emphasized the critical need to enhance cybersecurity measures, especially for vital infrastructure systems exposed to the internet.
