Abbas Araghchi, in a post on X, criticized Trump’s “Economic D-Day” as a distraction from America’s own financial challenges, including mounting debt and rising interest costs. Araghchi emphasized that persisting with unsuccessful policies would only lead to further defeat and animosity towards Iranians, warning that U.S. economic aggression poses a threat to the global economy and sovereignty worldwide.
Trump’s declaration of implementing “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale” against Iran came just a day before Araghchi’s response, where he highlighted the absence of a lasting deal to end the prolonged conflict as the trigger. The U.S. president’s statement on Truth Social also cautioned countries about facing “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” if they support Iran in any way, calling for global alignment to counter the perceived Iran threat.
While China is a significant buyer of Iran’s oil, engaging in further economic hostilities with China could provoke retaliatory actions. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, during a press briefing, emphasized the ineffectiveness of sanctions and pressure tactics, urging responsible political and diplomatic actions from all parties involved.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that focusing on economic measures could mitigate the need for major military operations against Tehran. Following the U.S. threats of financial penalties to end the ongoing conflict, oil prices surged to their highest point in over three weeks. Dan Shapiro, a former U.S. ambassador, highlighted the risks of escalating tensions with Iran, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to prevent further economic and military escalations.
Iran has been subject to severe economic sanctions for years, intensified during the Trump administration’s conflict with Iran since February. The protracted conflict has resulted in numerous casualties, with peace negotiations stalling. Despite the expiration of a 60-day negotiation period earlier in the week with no extension announced, Trump hinted at the possibility of resuming talks in the future.
