“Study Explores Health Risks of Airborne Algae Toxins”

Residents near Lake Erie are well-acquainted with cautions regarding blue-green algae blooms. The advice typically includes avoiding swimming, keeping pets away, and refraining from ingesting the water due to potential health issues like rashes, sore throats, or red eyes. However, researchers are now investigating the health implications of airborne algae particles that can be inhaled, even without direct contact with the water.

Led by Professor David Kennedy from the University of Toledo, the Great Lakes Center for Freshwater and Human Health is conducting a study on the impact of airborne algae toxins on human health. Over the last two and a half years, researchers have been analyzing how these toxins affect individuals’ health when breathed in. The study, known as the Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study (GLAMR), focuses on individuals living, working, or recreating in the western basin of Lake Erie.

The ongoing study aims to understand the effects of airborne algae toxins on both healthy individuals and those potentially more susceptible to the toxins. Around 200 participants have provided samples for the study, representing about 75% of the total goal. Participants are asked to report their feelings during peak bloom seasons and provide various samples for analysis.

Experts suggest that inhaling algae toxins can lead to health issues similar to asthma, as evidenced by symptoms like the so-called “August cough” experienced by boaters and fishermen on Lake Erie. While the long-term effects of airborne algae exposure are still being studied, it is known that inhaling toxins can have more severe consequences than ingesting them.

The study also aims to define how far and how long algae toxins can travel in the air. Researchers emphasize the importance of understanding the risks associated with airborne algae exposure, especially for coastal communities around Lake Erie. They stress the need for public awareness and potential preventive measures to mitigate health risks posed by airborne algae toxins.
