Fifteen-year-old Finn Holland, an animal lover, sprang into action when he discovered a shark stranded on a beach near his home in Maces Bay, a coastal community in southern New Brunswick. With determination, Finn and his family used their side-by-side vehicle to reach the beach where they found the injured shark. Despite initial concerns about its condition, Finn decided to assist the shark by gently guiding it back into the water by its tail.
The shark, later identified as a porbeagle shark, measured around two meters in length and weighed approximately 70 kilograms. Reflecting on the experience, Finn expressed his amazement at the encounter. His mother, Jill Holland, mentioned that Finn’s spontaneous act didn’t come as a surprise to her, highlighting his natural instinct to help without hesitation.
The Hollands, who have resided in Maces Bay for 11 years, were taken aback by the unusual presence of a shark in the area, as sightings are infrequent, according to shark expert Neil Hammerschlag. Porbeagles possess the unique ability to regulate their body temperature in cooler waters, enabling them to navigate regions like Atlantic Canada and New England.
Hammerschlag noted that the shark’s appearance in shallow waters was unexpected, suggesting a possible distress situation such as illness or entanglement in fishing gear. He emphasized the declining population of porbeagle sharks due to overfishing, making such encounters even more uncommon.
Finn’s heroic act has garnered significant community support, leaving him humbled by the positive response. Despite the inability of animals to express gratitude, Finn finds solace in the sense of fulfillment derived from knowing he did the right thing.
