German authorities are currently investigating an incident involving a drone carrying explosives and a detonator that was discovered at Leipzig airport. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to increase retaliation against countries supporting Ukraine, stating that they will use stronger methods to dismantle anything aiding the West in fueling Kyiv’s war efforts.
The drone, equipped with an unidentified explosive device, was found in the cargo operations area near the south runway of Leipzig airport, which is categorized as critical infrastructure. This airport plays a strategic role in NATO operations, facilitating the transportation of armaments, ammunition, and military supplies to Ukraine through flights operated by Ukrainian cargo companies.
The presence of the drone, located next to one of the Ukrainian cargo planes, signifies a heightened level of danger for Germany, as stated by the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. He described the incident as part of a sophisticated hybrid threat scenario, suggesting that it was not the work of amateurs.
While German authorities are still investigating the origins of the drone, U.S. intelligence officials have reportedly linked it to the Russian government. Berlin is approaching the situation cautiously, enhancing its capabilities to counter drones while refraining from premature attributions.

Hans-Jakob Schindler, a senior director at the Counter Extremism Project, views the drone incident in Leipzig as a significant escalation in Russian interference, testing Germany’s tolerance levels.
